Land of Living Stories Series

  • Each piece in the Land of Living Stories Series connects to the overarching themes of "Brush and Focus" by exploring the profound relationship between land, heritage, and healing. The lush green settings, combined with symbolic representations like Eban, Mpatapo, Sankofa, and Nyame Biribi Wo Soro, invite viewers to reflect on the significance of cultural and ancestral connections. My experience with the Joy Project has brought so much light, history, and community into my life, deepening my understanding of the interconnectedness between our roots and the land. This series serves as a reminder of the strength found in reconnecting with our roots, honoring the legacies of those who came before us, and understanding the cultural and historical significance of our surroundings.

The Joy Project is structured around four tenets: Recognition, Remembering, Reconciliation, and Restoration. These principles guide the narrative of each piece, creating a dialogue about the importance of acknowledging and learning from the past, honoring the memories of our ancestors, seeking peace and reconciliation, and fostering renewal and growth in our communities. By embedding these cultural symbols within the natural elements of the garden, the Land of Living Stories Series underscores a narrative of collective healing and community resilience.

The chosen Adinkra symbolsEban (symbolizing love and protection), Mpatapo (representing peace and reconciliation), Sankofa (embodying the idea of learning from the past), and Nyame Biribi Wo Soro (symbolizing hope and divine promise)—align with the project's mission to engage with our community in conversations about history and heritage. These themes resonate deeply with the broader exhibition's exploration of identity, self-expression, and cultural memory, offering a powerful commentary on the ways in which our environments shape and reflect our inner worlds.

The interplay of light, shadow, and natural textures in these works emphasizes the delicate balance between vulnerability and strength—a recurring motif throughout "Brush and Focus." This series not only highlights the nurturing power of nature but also invites contemplation on the process of remembering and restoration. The Joy Project series, with its integration of cultural symbols and natural elements, enriches the exhibition’s broader narrative by showcasing the continuous journey of renewal and the ever-present need to honor and restore connections to our ancestral roots and environments.
